A year ago today…

It’s hard to believe that a year ago today I submitted my Peace Corps application. So much has happened this past year since then and as I look back and reflect on this whole process I have been amazed at how things have seemed to come together.

I have learned that each application process is different for each person. Here’s just a quick glimpse of what my timeline was like over this past year…

  • May 16, 2013 – submitted Peace Corps application (and then my computer died that night -ha)
  • May 29, 2013 – had an interview with the local Peace Corps recruiter at PSU just days before her last day on the job (plus I even knew her since she is the sister of one of my close friends – fun)
  • May 31 – Received Peace Corps nomination (which means I could continue along with the process)
  • June 12 – I submitted all my legal and medical paperwork
  • November 7 – my paperwork was finally assigned a nurse to go through the pre-medical clearance
  • December 24 – received my pre-medical clearance
  • January 9, 2014 – received an invitation to serve in Moldova
  • January 11 – Accepted invitation!
  • June 2 – departure date

During this whole process I have had a wonderful crew of people walking along with me… from helping me with my resume, to a friend who is a police officer was able to help with the fingerprinting/legal documents, to the awesome team at the UPS store across from Wegmans help me mail many official documents, to the supportive co-workers from the job I just left, and the many family & friends who have listened to me, cried with me, and laughed along with me through this whole thing. What a journey… I am so grateful. And here it is, just the beginning… and an ending all at the same time.

We had an
We had an “invitation reveal” party where we all learned together where I would be going. Friends and family from near and far joined in on this fun, last minute gathering.

It’s a “plot twist”

I had recently made a comment to someone how when something doesn’t seem to go your way in life, a turn of unexpected events happens… you should yell out “plot twist!”… little did I know I would soon be shouting this out for myself. It’s been a long while since I last updated this blog. There have been a few things going on since then that I couldn’t share… until now. Within the past 6-8 months I had been going through the long process of waiting to see if I would receive an invitation to serve with the Peace Corps. On January 9, 2014 I got an answer and an invitation to serve in Moldova! Honestly, I had to learn where it was located.

Moldova is located in Eastern Europe, between Ukraine and Romania. It’s about the size of Maryland and has around 3,559,500 residents living in the country (according to Wikipedia). What is it like in Moldova? You can get a little glimpse of it here:

This certainly wasn’t on my radar a year ago at this time, I’m in awe of what can happen in a year and how much can change. And here I am, preparing to leave for at least 2 years (27 months) to be stretched and challenged in ways that I cannot even imagine. I’ll be moving/departing June 2, 2014 and I hope to be sharing some of the adventures along the way through this blog.

(On a side note, I found it ironic that the last time I updated this blog was on June 2 – also my current departure date for the Peace Corps.)
