This past May was my final month before reaching the one year mark (June 4). It had been filled with holiday celebrations, youth trainings, hanging out with kindergartners, a trip to Iasi, and a weekend in the village along with some randomness… overall, I’d say it was a pretty good month!
Salut, Balti had a spring training for the first 3 weekends in May. For each weekend, Saturday and Sunday we spent the time with youth as they went through the leadership and volunteer training.
May 9 was Victory Day which celebrates the surrender of Germany to the Soviet Union during the Second World War. There was a parade in the morning and people placed flowers at the tank monument in the center of town and gathered at the war memorial park after the parade.
Hram was celebrated on May 22 where the city of Balti celebrates when it was founded. You can read more about this celebration at: “ Hram is a day for… what?”
My host mom’s kindergarten class where I went once a week to teach them some English words celebrated their last day of kindergarten this month. My host mom put together a whole program of songs, poems, and dancing. More to come about this later!
May 29 marked the last day of school and all the schools in Moldova celebrated with a last bell ceremony, similar to the first bell ceremony. But this time with the senior class of graduates performing songs and dances. They’re dancing the hora here in the photo above. Then at the end, they had a first-form student being carried on the shoulders of a senior student to ring the last bell of the year and then the seniors released balloons.
On Memorial Day myself and a few other PCVs took a day trip adventure to Iasi, Romania since it is so close to the border. I would have taken more photos, but I was taking a bit of a break from things and just trying to enjoy life in the moment. It was a wonderful day-trip of delicious food, shopping, and walking a little bit around the city. I’m looking forward to the next trip when I can spend a little more time exploring… and I can go hang out in this park and enjoy this beautiful view!
Not bad for making it through almost a full year before something like this happened while traveling via rutiera public transportation. Thankfully we were picked up about 30 minutes later after this happened by a bus filled with a high school soccer team and made it back to Balti in time for a meeting that evening.
I spent the last weekend of May at my host family’s village house. I will share some hilarious stories from that weekend later… but I certainly picked and ate a lot of strawberries!
